English to Spanish translations [PRO] Medical: Health Care | | English term or phrase: ... under their own steam as well as those in.... | What do you think universal design means?
Well...you've all heard of "universal precautions" (now called standard precautions) which tell us to treat all clients as if they were infectious. The theory behind universal design is similar. It guides architects to treat all people as if they had physical limitations. For example, what do you see now when you go into a public bathroom? You probably see a few "regular" stalls, for "normal" people–and one large stall labeled "handicapped accessible". In a bathroom that has been designed according to universal design principles, all the stalls would look the same–and would be accessible by people who walk in under their own steam as well as those in wheelchairs. Architects who believe in universal design say that it is no more expensive than making "separate" facilities for handicapped individuals. |
