Data from the RE-MEDY and RE-SONATE trials have proven that dabigatran etexilate is an effective and safe option for the long-term treatment and secondary prevention of symptomatic venous thromboembolism (VTE) following initial anticoagulant therapy. A more favourable bleeding profile compared with warfarin positively differentiates dabigatran etexilate vs. the long time standard of care.

In RE-SONATE, extended treatment with dabigatran etexilate was associated with an unparalleled 92% relative risk reduction for recurrent VTE and a low risk for major bleeding compared with placebo in patients not advocated for further treatment with warfarin after initial anticoagulant therapy. In patients advocated for warfarin following initial anticoagulant therapy, RE-MEDY showed that dabigatran etexilate was as effective as well-controlled warfarin for recurrent VTE or VTE related death, with significant reductions in any bleeding events and a lower number of major bleeds.

agree  Sonia Torregrosa: apologies, why does your explanation says 'NO se recomienda'? wouldn´t this be all the contrary, 'pacientes a quienes se recomienda el tratamiento con warfarin'? sorry, the doubt just pop out after reading your answer...

Saludos.
