English to Spanish translations [Non-PRO] Medical - unspecified | | English term or phrase: osteopenia | Osteopenia is a thinning of the bones, but less than is seen with osteoporosis -- it is the stage before true osteoporosis. Bone density is described in relationship to what it should be in young women; it is expressed as a standard deviation from the mean (average) bone density in a 35-year-old. Within 1 standard deviation of the mean in either direction is considered normal. A bone density within the range of 1 to 2.5 standard deviations below the mean is defined as osteopenia, and greater than 2.5 standard deviations below the mean is osteoporosis.
