..reacciones tienden a ser magnificadas en niños con hipotiroidismo no reconocido (tiroide menos activa), hipoglicemia (reacciones de baja azucar en la sangre), diabetes, y fenilcetonuria o PKU. Las personas con PKU no tienen la enzima necesaria para manejar la fenilalanina, que puede causar daño neurológico y otros daños si las precauciones dietéticas dirigidas a prevenir niveles excesivos no son tomadas.

agree  Luis Orueta: in medicine, best stick to the technical terms if you can. my mother has it and the doctor calls it this

-> estoy de acuerdo, es bueno que los pacientes conozcan la terminología médica

neutral  Sol: I agree they need to learn the term, but this is an educational brochure, this is where they learn what it means
3 hrs
-> sure, but they need to know what it means AND the technical name, so that they understand what the doctor says, IMHO

agree  agtranslat: Por su naturaleza como lenguaje, el español tiene comparativamente menos dificiltades con términos técnicos en uso general, y si las cosas tienen un nombre mejor es usarlo.

hipotiroidismo

Explanation:
That's the name of the condition. I've also seen 'hipoactiva', although I'm not crazy about that one.

Unfortunately, confirmed by "experience" (dealing with this condition for over 10 years)

disminución de la función tiroidea

Explanation:
Es la alternativa que yo elegiría si el término médico "hipotiroidismo" no se adapta al estilo del texto. También puede ser: "disminución de la función tiroidea (hipotiroidismo)", como sugiere Alfredo Gonzalez.
Suerte! :)

neutral  Michelle Wolfson: Even though it shows up a lot in U.S. web sites in Spanish, a google search for the term "tiroidal" shows that is not really used in Spanish speaking countries. "Tiroidea" is the preferred term.

glandula tiroidea hipoactiva

Explanation:
The expression "glandula tiroidal" does not exist in Spanish. The right translation for that is "glandula tiroidea" and the translation of the whole thing is "glandula tiroidea hipoactiva"
