YO creo que aquí "linguist" no es 'lingüista' sino 'intérprete'. SEgún RAE, "lingüista" es una persona versada en lingüística, no creo que aquí sea el caso, sino más bien el de un intérprete, como se explica en el propio texto. Saludos

Contratista especialista en idiomas


Explanation:
El uso comun de "linguist" en el ejercito de los EEUU se refiere casi siempre a personas bilingues (por lo general ingles y otro idioma). Por lo menos en el uso general no tiene que ver con la linguistica. De hecho, tengo un par de colegas que han trabajado en los ultimos 4 años con el ejercito fungiendo como "linguists" contratistas independientes especialistas en idiomas (en el caso de ellos en arabe). Espero que esto te ayude. Buena Suerte. Otra cosa muchos usan linguist como sinonimo de interprete y traductor.
