Este es el término utilizado más habitualmente en la industria alimentaria. Conviene tener en cuenta que hasta la sal común entraría dentro de esa clasificación, ya que no deja de ser un compuesto químico con su correspondiente fórmula (cloruro de sodio (NaCl)).

Dentro de este concepto se engloban los conservantes, colorantes, potenciadores del sabor, etc.
