It used to be that high tops were also called basketball shoes. But now there are also basketball shoes that are low tops.

In regard to low tops new fashion, well, that's an old timer, they were alrady used in basketball early times, so I reckon (off-the-record) they should be call just "zapatillas" or , to specify a little more "zapatillas cortas" or "zapatillas bajas". Searches didn't get any educated hits. However, the 'solonosotras' (!) link 2 might be interesting as it talks of "botas bajas". There also are "botas cortas"... If a basketball shoe is a "bota" and supposed to be "alta" or "larga", why not "bota corta (de baloncesto)". Boot for thought, cheers :)
