kumis Explanation: In Colombia at least, we translate buttermilk as "Kumis", but I think that this is a very local word. In other countries I would think they use "leche cortada" for buttermilk, which is milk processed in a certain way. Whey is "suero", and this is the remains of the milk after making the cheese.
