Spanish translation:caballo cuarterón
Explanation:
I did some work some time ago in Mexico and had to do with horses and show jumping, etc. The term cuarterón was used for quarterhorses, but I do not know if it was slang or not. The qaurterhorses are small sized racers that run a very fast quartermile and then apparently they will slow down. Hope this helps! Good luck!

Quarterhorses are racing horses

Explanation:
So called because the standard race was one quarter of a mile. I'm no expert, but I believe there was a certain breed of horses generally used for racing because of their speed, and this breed became known as "quarterhorses".

Cuarto de Milla

Explanation:
This is the official name in Spanish. In fact, it refers to the "quarter of a mile" the first answer referred to.

See below an interesting site on it.

Hope this helps!

Cuarto de Milla

Explanation:
A "Cuarto de Milla" is used for cowboy or "ranchero" needs. For its strength and stamina. They are not very good for jumping. They are working horses which are "explosive" in running short distances hence the name quarter horse, or Cuarto de Milla.
Quarterón, means a mixed breed horse. In jumping shows a quarterón means that the horse is not of a pure bred. Could be the mix of warmblood, with arab, some Hunting horse, etc.
