La castaña de agua es una planta acuática que crece
fija al fondo y desarrolla en la superficie del agua una roseta de hojas en
cuya axila nacen las flores blancas. El fruto tiene cáscara negra muy dura
y se parece a las castañas. Especie Trapa natans.

Trapa natans (Castaña de agua o Abrojo acuático). Planta con hojas flotantes que recuerdan ligeramente al acebo. Las semillas, espinosas y negras, son comestibles.

Occasionally cultivated for its edible seed, there is at least one named variety[1, 3, 13]. 'Su Zhou' is a form with red-coloured fruit[183].
