Me rectifico; "seguirle el rastro" no es la única. También se puede decir "seguirle la pista", "seguirle los pasos", dependiendo del contexto. Pero "seguirle el rastro" sigue siendo la mejor porque aplica a cualquier cotexto. Por otra parte, "to track something" es "rastrear algo".

realmente pienso que todas las respuestas anteriores son válidas.yo te doy una diferente. Yo utilizo mucho esta expresión en mi trabajo y frecuentemente la traduzco como "seguimiento". Tambien se puede traducir por "monitorizar" pero es un anglicismo que a mi parecer debemos evitar.
