This makes it a bit harder for the student, who has to understand that the question applies to "él" from context, but it is more natural in Spanish, and I think it's ideal if you can teach students to speak naturally and not underestimate their possibilities.

It could also be "¿Cual es su nombre?", but it can be a bit misleading because "su" could also mean "her" and the formal "you" (Usted).
