Explanation:
Cuando se perfora un pozo petrolero, conforme se avanza se coloca una tubería de acero para evitar que se derrumben las paredes del mismo, así como el filtrado de los fluídos de la formación geológica, etc. Hecho eso, se aplica una lechada de cemento para adherir la tubería de ademe (o revestimiento, como también se la llama) a las paredes del agujero.

Explanation:
"Surface casing" se llama al primer tramo de entubación se coloca en el pozo, desde la superficie (boca de pozo) hasta una peofundidad variable que depende del diseño del pozo y de las características geológicas del terreno.
Si bién es también una entubación, se la distingue de las demás porque cumple una función específica: proteger los acuíferos superficiales (groundwater), sellar la parte superior del pozo para prevenir los "blowup" y proteger la parte superior del pozo, donde el terreno en general suele ser menos consoldidado que en profundidad.
