Some digital cameras allow you to set this value using the familiar EV range (+/-2 EV), others simply have "high, normal, and low" settings. This feature is useful to compensate when the cameras flash metering was not perfect and caused under- or overexposure.
Example sentence(s): - Then, you can control flash output compensation by setting the required level on the external Speedlight (SB-600, SB-800, SB-900); the flash output compensation factor will not be overridden by the D3, allowing you to obtain repeatable flash exposures. Magic Lantern Guides, page 323
 - In AA mode, flash output compensation is possible in 1/3 steps from -3.0 to +1.0EV by pressing the { or } button to increase or decrease the compensation while confirming the amount on the LCD panel. Modern Classic SLRs Series
 - It is also possible to directly dial in flash output compensation in 1/3 stop increments, which is very precise and convenient as otherwise one would have to tweak aperture settings. Oleg Novikov Photography
