Por otra parte, "wake" es una vigilia, en que la gente permanece junto al difunto durante toda una noche - es decir, la ceremonia es la misma, sólo que esta última es de más larga duración.

Creo que hay una diferencia, y tengo la impresión que la Capilla Ardiente es católica, mientras el velorio o velatorio es común para la mayoría de las religiones. Vamos a dejar la preguna abierta las 24 horas de rigor, para ver qué otras opiniones nos llegan. ¡Gracias!
A wake is a short period following death when the body is on view at the funeral home. Effectively, I believe they are one and the same thing. In the US, some people call them viewings, others call them wakes, but in both cases the body is "viewed."
