como si la fuera a estrangular

"death grip" es una expresión que no necesariamente se usa en su sentido literal. En sentido figurado aparece muchas veces para transmitir la idea de agarrar algo para no soltarlo. Aquí, creo que el autor lo usa más bien para mantener el tono de violencia, por eso sugiero "estrangular", que da la idea de que la agarró muy enojado, con fuerza y violentamente, pero deja la lógica de que realmente no tiene intenciones de matar a la cafetera.
