que estaba en el medio del agua


Explanation:
"Jutted out INTO" is not the same as "sobresalir DE" (which is "to jut out FROM"). Here it means that the temple is in the water, whether it's on a platform or whatever I don't know. And as your context shows, a bridge is necessary to get to it.
