"But why are you here? I mean, I know that you broke the law but it wasn't anything that serious". Locking up den mother in the most secure prison they possessed seemed a little overkill, even forthe Circle.

No estoy siguiendo el hilo del texto (por lo que veo hay consultas anteriores). Asumo qué "el Círculo" es un grupo al que pertenece el sujeto y no una entidad que lo persigue.

Hecha esta aclaración, más allá del significado exacto de "den mother" (que no sabría cómo introducir en la frase traducida), sugiero utilizar un concepto asociado: "resguardar, ocultar, esconder, encerrar, enclaustrar, recluir" como medida de "protección, defensa".
