English term or phrase: where they came to earth
I´m translating an extract of H. E. Bates´ "Alexander" from “Twenty Tales”. I don´t find a good Spanish translation for the expression from above. I mean, I do not get exactly what it refers to. Can you help me , please? Thank you in advance.

The line where the term appears goes like:

"A covey of patridges scurried, screamed, then spread out like a black fan and vanished, the barley ears aving briefly and lightly where they came to earth."

al aterrizar

Explanation:
Entiendo que se posan en el suelo, pero no sobre la cebada (son perdices, no gorriones). La cebada se mueve porque se han posado entre los tallos.
