General conversation would tutear of course. But these codified sequences would be identical whether used with real respect towards dignitaries, superiors, older people etc or with more casual intent to ones "brothers".

Since most usages would imply "usted" it seems to me that a "standard" translation should use the 3rd person. Using the 2nd person in a greeting would seem to stress the intimacy between the speakers - my feeling is that this would be undue emphasis.

But I'm far from being an expert - it would be worth consulting a native speaker!

Esto me plantea, entonces, un problema en todo el libro. El original es en inglés, escrito por un ciudadano estadounidense, que de vez en cuando inserta alguna que otra frase o palabra en árabe. Estoy utilizando el tuteo constantemente. Decidí hacerlo al ver que se tratan entre ellos como "hermanos". De hecho, mirando novelas traducidas al español de contexto similar, encontré el tuteo como forma de trato habitual en paises del mundo árabe. Eso sí, sus saludos y expresiones, salvo el tuteo, son tremendamente elaboradas y respetuosas. Ahora me haces dudar, Donal!

Arabic salutations are quite formal and respectful. If you're going with a Spanish translation, I wouldn't tutear.

este es precisamente el libro que estoy traduciendo y donde el autor pone este saludo en inglés. Lo que debo encontrar, pues, es una traducción al español. Estoy decantándome, a falta de más inspiración y sugerencias, por: "Qué tu noche sea luminosa" y como réplica: " Y qué tu noche sea de rosas". ¿Qué os parece a todos los que habeis sugerido e intervenido?

Google Translate will give you the sound quite well.

I have only beginner's Arabic myself. As Christine says Sabah is morning, masah evening. The original was مساء الوردة

There are more colloquial variants on صباح الخير/النور that you can use, like صباح القشطة (SabāH il-'išTa - lit. morning of cream), صباح الفل (SabāH il-full - lit. morning of jasmine), and صباح الورد (SabāH il-ward - lit. morning of rose). They're a little "baladi" (i.e. used more by the rural and lower classes), but you can still use them to add some color to your speech.

Seguro que es eso... pero de árabe no tengo ni idea!!! A lo largo del texto, el autor suele dejar en árabe las expresiones y, en muchos casos, explica su significado. Aquí, sin embargo, intuyo que ha realizado una traducción directamente, que yo a mi vez tengo que traducir... y le doy vueltas y vueltas sin encontrar una solución que me agrade.

I think this is a standard salutation/response sequence. "Evening of the rose" would sound like "masah al-warda" (مساء الوردة) - such a phonetic representation may be a possible solution?

La novela está escrita en inglés por un norteamericano. El autor plasma un díalogo entre dos yemeníes e imagino que al hacerlo traduce un saludo árabe que debe de ser bastante habitual. Estoy en blanco y no sé cómo traducirlo!!! Gracias y un abrazo.

Cual es el idioma original de la novela? Fue traducida al inglés previamente, o directamente escrita en inglés? Estaba pensando que si es lo segundo puede ser alguna licencia poética del autor, y en ese caso se podría traducir casi literalmente. Saludos
