El ambicioso puede tener un deseo ardiente de conseguir poder, riquezas, dignidad o fama, pero no siempre lo hará valiéndose de artimañas poco claras; en cambio el arribista sí.

No se cual es el contexto, pero me parece que ambicioso tiene una connotacion menos negativa que arribista.
