Rubel (1964) propuso la siguiente definición para las categorías populares de malestar (distress): conjunto coherente de síntomas en una población dada cuyos miembros responden mediante patrones similares; actualmente se les ha llamado expresiones de sufrimiento (idioms of distress), trastornos específicos de determinadas culturas, expresiones de infortunio, síndromes populares y otros. Hemos escogido el término de síndromes ligados a la cultura o de síndromes culturales (culture bound syndromes) por considerar que es el que mejor refleja esta realidad.
