John and Mary’s marriage had reached a life-changing point. The truths of their lives were laid out as clearly as the boundaries that remained between them. More fighting wouldn’t bridge the barriers any more than it could mask them. J and M each had to assess what he or she really thought was happening and decide what to do. They did it separately and, paradoxically, together. Each partner’s refusal to cave in and give up created the necessary crucible for the other.

agree  jbren: Sounds much more natural except I would keep to "barreras." I agree though that "diferencias" gets the points across quite well.

Me parece que es algo así como "las discusiones solamente taparían/disfrazarían/pondrían una máscara sobre las barreras en lugar de servir para vencerlas/superarlas"

Es lo que logro captar por el contexto.

Mike,
Otra opción para "barreras" sería *estructuras mentales/patrones de comportamiento/ideas fijas* En este caso la "barrera" es una idea preconcebida con la que se llega al matrimonio (por ejemplo: "este no me va a gritar!, este a mi no me toca!, esta a mí no me pide cuentas de mi tiempo/de lo que hago/de mi dinero!)

"Las discusiones no les servirían para conectar/unir sus estructuras de pensamiento más de lo que las mantendrían encubiertas" ...o algo así! : ) I think I´m sleepy!!
