poner verde

Explanation:
Sería: "Es un crimen poner verde a alguien en público".
Entiendo que no se refiere a golpear a alguien físicamente, sino en sentido figurado

acometer

Explanation:
This is the only thing that comes to mind off hand - a translation of my interpretation, where I interpret slam away as meaning to verbally assault someone furiously. Of course acometer is not a slang term, so probably not ideal. Maybe this will help jog some others' minds... Anyway just hoping to be of help.

Then again, acometer is verbal OR physical attack, so regardless of my interpration being a verbal lashing, the Spanish word still holds for physical lashing, too. But of course, as I said, it's not slang.

At first I was thinking about burlar-se or ridiculizar, but I think slam away is more violent. It is an assault instead of a mockery. I dunno.
