The U. S. government's figures make a definite distinction between "families" and "households". A household is simply an address at which at least one person lives.
Si tu audiencia es mexicana, yo te sugiero que no uses el trmino familiar, ya que en nustro pas es una palabra que se refiere a las familias, es decir matrimonio, hijos y dems parientes. Por otro lado, en Mxico se usa el tmrino "promedio". Suerte!
Margarita is right, and since "familiar" does indeed have the connotation of marriage, blood relation or family ties, it would not be the correct translation here.

I would not use the word "familiar" because that is not the meaning of household income in English. It has nothing to do with whether the couple is or is not married, or is or is not gay.
This will be presented to a mostly Mexican audience. I don't know if that'll affec t whether "promedio" or "medio" is used, since the use of "medio" is preferred in Spain.
