Explanation:
"ripping a swath" is an idiomatic expression and can't be translated word for word. I think 'dejando una estela' is the equivalent idiom here;

XX fue reclutado como niño-soldado, incorporado a las brutales fuerzas rebeldes que dejaban tras si una estela de tortura y sangre derramada a traves de la campiña, por turnos hermosa y devastada.
