This just means that he moved laterally as opposed to forward. He went towards the sidelines would work in this case, because he went out of bounds in the end. My 1 confidence is because I don't know how to phrase it in Spanish, but I understand the term 100%. He went wide/he moved to the side/he cut to the left-right/he ran towards the sidelines/he moved-ran sideways/he ran out of bounds laterally. That should give you the basic idea.
