In pool or billiars, when you set and use the cue ball (the white one) you break or do the break, that is you hit the other balls that are lined up in a certain way and each ball is numbered. The eight-ball is key, because it has to be the last ball to go in when playing 8-ball. Of course, it might be a differnt game, and then you can call the ball you want to go in, sometimes divided between stripes and solids, other times chronologically.

I assume "ball" in pool is "pelota" but I am not certain.
