Independientemente de cómo traduzcas "at the expense of", en castellano no diría "el noble arte", a menos que especifique cuál... en todo caso, "ese noble arte"....

que no estaban a la altura del noble arte


Explanation:
con unos cuantos golpes (jabs) exploratorios que no estaban a la altura del noble arte / carentes de la destreza que caracteriza al noble arte

creo que en este tipo de traducción conviene apartarse un poco de lo estrictamente literal, otra propuesta:

"...golpes...desprovistos de la nobleza que supone el arte del boxeo"

o

"...que le faltaban el respeto al noble arte"

" sin la más mínima elegancia pugilística..."
