The National Collegiate Athletic Association governs sports competition among American colleges and universities, and an NCAA "All-American" would be one of the best college players in his or her sport. But the same sport might be played in high school and also professionally, and each of those levels could have its own "all-Americans." Also, there's nothing to keep different magazines or sponsoring companies from selecting their own lists of "all-Americans" in the same sport. McDonald's, the fast-food company, pays for (sponsors) the selection of "all-American" high school teams in some sports, but so do magazines with national circulation. Some athletes might be on several "all-American" lists, others on only one. A "consensus all-American" is an athlete who appears on several or a majority of the competing lists of the best players in a single sport.
