English term or phrase: a scout
There are two related areas where the word occurs (occurred?):

1) Sport: someone who reports on the performance of rival teams. This is NOT a talent scout (cazatalentos),
more like an industrial spy - I imagine they are less needed in the TV era.

2) Oil Industry: someone who keeps watch on the activities of other companies. I don't know how dated this use is.

The nearest Spanish equivalent I can think of is "escucha: centinela que se acerca a las posiciones enemigas para observarlas". Is "ojeador" mostly used in the sense of cazatalentos, or is it used in the sense of escucha as well?

Is there any single noun (or short phrase) for this?

Podríamos distinguir entre dos conceptos.

espionaje industrial: ilícito
inteligencia competitiva: lícita


Veo que alguna página deportiva deja el "estudio del contrario" como "scouting", en inglés.
Acá ponen: "“exploradores de innovaciones” o “innovation scouts” son profesionales ..."

Me parece que usar "exploradores" es un calco, pensando en Baden Powell. Por eso te propongo "observadores".

The “innovation scouts” seem close to what this function is/was. I don't know to what extent it may have widened out to being an "informante" in practice, so I'd better stick to the legal part of the function.

Explanation:
My S&S traduce "Scout" como "informador" (en deportes, alguien que obtiene datos en cuanto a habilidad, forma de juego, etc., del rival).
A mí me suena más "informante". Ambos figuran como "que informa" en la RAE.

Asker: Thanks for that cgower. Part of my problem is that I don't actually know to what extent the oil industry activities were legal. I suspect the word may have been used euphemistically for somewhat dubious practices!
