Then Cayard was relegated from the sailing team to an administrative role and Dickson soon followed. Still an experienced team and the largest, with 140 members all up.

This was the Kudoz disagree note:
The afterguard is the \'brains trust\' positioned at the back of the racing sailboat. Includes the skipper, the tactician etc.

Entonces para la navegación también se puede traducir como: tripulación

Urico has a point, it is probably originally tripulación de popa but I think in the highly professional America\'s Cup this is not used, and I have found 0 Google hits on that combined with \"copa america\". Equipo técnico has more hits.

ya está en el glosario de KudoZ, the person who disagreed had a good explanation. Just do a search: type "afterguard" and chose the language pair.

tripulación de popa / tripulación popel

Explanation:
Según el Diccionario Webster (Webster´s Third New International Dictionary) "afterguard" tiene dos significados = 1. The division composed usually of ordinary seamen and apprentices stationed on the poop or after part of a ship to attend the after sails.
2. The owner and other amateurs of a yacht´s crew.

En el contexto que planteas creo que la acepción que más se aproxima es la primera de ellas. La segunda a mi entender queda descartada porque no creo que el timonel y el capitán del buque puedan calificarse de "amateurs".
