Supongo que el concepto se refiere a erosión, pero no sé si es esta la palabra que se ha de utilizar en este contexto.

Yo usaría en este caso rebajar la superficie. Porque la idea es que con ese roce permanente la superficie se va rayando, produciendo grietas microscópicas, y su espesor disminuye (se rebaja).
