El empleado cuando está en la oficina trabaja en una LAN, en este caso. Está conectado con el sistema / la red corporativa y por este medio puede realizar cualquier tipo de consulta, gestión de correo, tareas de calendario, reuniones, ,solicitud de ayuda, etc...

Al estar fuera de la oficina, se habla de "trabajar en remoto".

Lo de "dial in" es porque el usuario, al no estar conectado in situ, suele conectarse a través de una línea telefónica "normal" (aunque sea ADSL, etc.), no mediante una conexión a la red local como si estuviera en el trabajo.

Referencias: Trabajo "en remoto" en Barcelona desde hace 5 años, alternando entre la oficina y una "ubicación remota", es decir, mi casa.
