Noel, I found the following phraseology in EuroDicAutom. The term is used in offshore drilling:
"one way of checking what is going on in a pipeline is to insert some solid separator at the interface, fitting closely enough in the pipe to make sure that it will be pushed along at the same time as the oil; such devices are known as "batching pigs"... "un modo de comprobar el comportamiento de transporte de una tuberia es la insercion de algun separador solido en la interfase que se ajuste adecuadamente al diametro interior de la tuberia para asegurar que se desplazara con la misma velocidad que el petroleo; estos dispositivos se conocen como "conejo" (calibre) de separacion de cargas.

Explanation:

Right now I'm working on a translation on "Inspección de Tuberías con Cochino Inteligente" (smart pig in English). These pigs are high-resolution tools used to detect thinning in pipeline walls. Pipeline pigs ya te han dicho otros colegas de que se trata. Aquí en Venezuela (industria petrolera) se llaman "cochinos", ya sea para para limpiar tuberías, separar dos líquidos diferentes en bombeos por tuberías o para inspección automática (en sitio) de tuberias (cochinos electrónicos).
