"Developments in equipment for highway construction
A 1960’s look at some of the equipment and devices that helped to make highway construction and maintenance work less costly.
by H. A. Radzikowski
In comparison with other countries, modern highway construction in the United States is highly mechanized. We have, for example, 81 tractor-dozers per 1,000 construction workers, compared with 5.8 units in Russia and only 0.9 of a unit in Poland.
Highway construction and maintenance in the United States are the principal source of support for our construction-machinery manufacturing industry. Both programs at their present levels require approximately 40% of the total annual production. The total equipment, including motor vehicles, available for highway construction and maintenance is about 750,000 units, including approximately 350,000 units for construction purposes.
The mere existence of such a fleet of equipment does not in itself assure the benefit of economy in highway construction. It must be deployed with considerable know-how, and its potential to produce quality work must not be hampered by unreasonable or restrictive provisions in construction specifications.
The same philosophy regarding work procedures or equipment requirements is not uniform in all highway-construction specifications. There is, consequently, a marked difference in the economy of operations. In general, those specifications that detail only the results required and that give the contractor the widest choice of methods and tools will encourage the use of the best machinery. This, in turn, will result in the greatest economy and quality.
What are some of these improved equipment developments?
New economies and better quality are being effected in the construction of base courses through the development and use of new and improved equipment. Several recently developed fine-grading devices have helped obtain smoother subgrades at reduced costs. These include the electronic attachment for motor graders that automatically maintains the set position of the blade with reference to grade, in spite of irregularities in the surface on which the machine travels.
Specifications are vital factor
In the development of new roadbuilding machinery and the use of new methods and devices, there is a great need to maintain conditions that will encourage the development of investments along this line. If road specifications in a state will not permit a contractor to use new equipment, he will be hesitant to invest in that type of equipment, even though he knows it is more efficient and will produce a better product." http://www.betterroads.com/articles/brjan01c.htm

"The heavy construction segment should provide a partial
offset since sales into the highway sector are forecast to increase as states accelerate
contracts for highway construction. Machine sales into the commodity segments should
begin to stabilize with the exception of agriculture where sales are forecast to decline for
another year. Overall, retail industry demand for machines is expected to decline because
of the drop in general construction, continued weakness in agriculture and a drop in
replacement buying due to the age of the current expansion."

disagree  Katrin Zinsmeister: Esto es más general y sería máquinas de construcción e incluiría p.ej. grúas, mezcladoras de cemento etc.
