The pea coat or pea jacket rightfully brings to mind the vision of sailors on the docks as European navy sailors and merchants were the first to wear them. They are characterized by a set of eight anchor-inscribed buttons or eight massive wooden buttons on the front. Navy Pea coats are normally short, heavy overcoats that are genetic from wool and navy bluishness in color. Pea coats have fanlike lapels and vertical or slash pockets. One column of buttons serves no purpose other than being decorative. The wide overlap of fabric of the double-breasted pea coat puts extra layers of fabric at the opening to help keep body heat.

The pea coat was originally name for the coarse cloth “pij” that was used for the pea coats. Sailors every moment pulled the wide lapels up without their necks to keep warm and ward of the winds and water on deck. They were typically produced from 30-ounce wool, which productive of them very warm. The word pea coat or pea jacket comes from the Dutch for Frisian word “pijjjakker” or “pijjecker”. By the nineteenth century, some called them pilot coats. The term “pea coat” or “pea jacket” starting being used in the beginning of the eighteen century. The pea coat goes by several other names as well. The United States Navy began to use these wool overcoats substantiality in the twentieth century.
