A lo largo de los siglos XIV y XV, una serie de factores socio-geográficos contribuyeron a producir un prodigioso florecimiento artístico en los Países Bajos burguiñones. Los artistas que hoy en día conocemos como Primitivos flamencos desarrollarían un estilo pictórico propio, caracterizado por un exacerbado naturalismo y un extraordinario cuidado del detalle, que inmediatamente les supuso un reconocimiento internacional. Sus obras -principalmente pinturas al óleo sobre tabla, obtenidas mediante la minuciosa superposición de capas de color transparentes y luminosas- marcan una etapa decisiva en la historia del arte universal y sitúan, de consuno con el arte italiano, los fundamentos del arte europeo moderno. Las actividades de los Primitivos flamencos se circunscribían sobre todo al antiguo condado de Flandes (con las ciudades de Brujas y Gante), al ducado de Brabante (con Bruselas y Lovaina) y al condado de Hainaut, en el que Tournai constituía un enclave francés.

There may not be a translation of "Flemish" (the Germanic, Dutch-like, language of Flanders, Belgium). If you refer to them using the term "flamenco," will it not be confused with something different (i.e., la cultura de origen árabe del sur de España)?
