Para usar esta versión, se tendrían que cumplir dos condiciones:

1. que el texto sea para España (para otros países no lo sé)
2. que haya una mínima explicación en el texto sobre la diferencia entre los términos

La primera, porque en España es sobradamente conocida la referencia al "downtown" de Nueva York

La segunda, porque quizá explique que el término 'downtown' es un uso generalmente norteamericano (de EEUU y Canadá, que no se me ofendan los colegas mexicanos).

Alternativamente, hacer un inciso tipo "el término norteamericano 'downtown' o incluir una nota al pie.

Explanation:
Es la solución que se me ocurre. Londres es una ciudad muy extendida y no hay "un" centro (como Manhattan en NY), sino varias zonas que todas pertenecen a lo que sería el Londres céntrico --la City, Westminster, pero también Kensington, Islington, etc.
Te paso dos enlaces que podrían aclarar un poco el panorama. Yo usaría "zonas céntricas" sin el artículo "las"....
