A movement and style of art from the 20th century which attempts to reduce art to the basic geometric shapes with the fewest colors, lines, and textures. Minimal art does not seek to be representational of any object.

riktning inom bl.a. konst och musik som arbetar med starkt reducerade eller elementära uttrycksmedel. Minimalismen inom konsten, ibland kallad primary structures, växte fram i USA på 1960-talet. Minimalistiska verk bygger på enkla former; för att undvika det subjektiva uttrycket låter konstnärerna ofta tillverka föremålen industriellt.
Inom musiken avses kompositioner karakteriserade av rytmisk och motivisk repetition med vanligen endast gradvisa små förändringar. Terry Riley, Steve Reich, Philip Glass och Michael Nyman hör till denna riktning. |
