An expansion valve that fails in the closed position will result in low suction pressure and no cooling. This may be caused by a failed *power dome* or excessive moisture in the A/C system. If the *power dome* on the expansion valve is found to be defective, replace the expansion valve.

The "power dome" of the valve is filled with many different things for more complicated systems, but for a fixed displacement compressor the power dome is usually filled with the system refrigerant. The purpose of the power dome is to provide a pressure on the diaphragm that varies with temperature, and it just happens to be that the R-12 pressure temperature curve is very close to the R-134a pressure temperature curve for the operating region of the evaporator.
