English term or phrase: x-membered

Could someone please help me with this? I'm subtitling a show on kit cars built from scratch, and the builder is referring to the chassi as "x-membered". I suppose it has to do with chemistry, but I'm not willing to guess... Please, someone? If you know the Swedish term that's of course fantastic, otherwise I'm just happy to have this explained to me in English for further research on my own. Thanks!
