Computers: Software / Password requirement

English term or phrase: total alphabetic character

Translating strings and these ones appeared and I get confused by the "total".
Password requires at least %d total letters.
Password requires at least %d total numbers.
Password requires at least %d total symbols.

What does "total" mean here?

My two cents: It's a sloppy variant of "a total of" or "in total". If I'm correct, the word "total" is of course superfluous in this context – totally! :-)
