Expressive writing – says Thompson – communicates the author’s thoughts or impressions or feelings about a topic, and often draws on his/her own experience, while expository writing describes, gives directions, lists facts, and informs the reader about the solid base of the research work under-taken. With the necessary riders, Thompson’s definition is a perfect description of the writing style of this dissertation. Throughout my work, I use expository writing when I present pools of data, research findings, concepts and theories. However I also use expressive writing when I employ examples to visualise ideas, concepts or theories and to analyse case materials. This means that in chapters 2 and 4, where I explore the conceptual fundamentals of emotional intelligence and the pedagogical potential of the adult-child relationship, I take a reduced number of theories in depth, use a style which is basically expressive and use narratives and vignettes to highlight (my reading of) the au-thors’ thinking. Chapters 3 and 5, on the other hand, are written in a more expository style, because here the objective is to review a process of the evolution of ideas about emotion research and the narrative paradigm in psychology." |
