To Check the Bearing Insulation on a Stationary Machine:
Electrically separate the halves of the flexible coupling.
Disconnect the cable from the housing of the DE bearing.
Use a 100V Megger to measure the resistance between the shaft and the baseplate. The resistance should be greater than 50k ohm for a new machine but may be as low as 1k ohm for a machine being re-commissioned after service.
If the resistance is below 1k ohm the cause should be investigated. It will usually be due to damaged liner insulation or faulty insulation on a thermocouple probe (see 6). Another less common cause is particles of ferrous material caught in the PMG airgap.
Refit the Earth cable.
