Top caps förekommer i en handbok för en synkrongenerator i avsnittet med anvisningar för hur man avmonterar rotorn:

REMOVAL OF THE ROTOR
Synopsis: The rotor is pulled out on skidding plates until the C of G emerges from the NDE of the generator. The rotor can then lifted away using a belly sling placed around its C of G or pulled further onto additional suitable supports.
l Both the generator stator and driving equipment can be left in situ.
l This method offers the minimum possible withdrawal distance.
l An overhead crane is not essential.

Read the following instructions in conjunction with the Rotor Withdrawal Procedure drawing:
Rotate the machine rotor until the rotor poles lie at 45 to the vertical and horizontal axis (see drawing).

Remove the cover plate in the endbracket above each bearing. Remove the top and bottom air splitter through the hole.

Unbolt and remove the fan housing. Pull it outwards and leave it resting on the shaft.

Remove the top caps off both bearings and the top halves of the bearing liners. Remove both oil rings.

Slightly lift the generator shaft using jacks in order to take the weight off the bottom-half bearing liners. Remove the liners, then lower the rotor gently to rest in the stator bore.

Remove the bearing housings.
