Tech/Engineering - Engineering (general) | | English term or phrase: hopper | a large (~4 tonnes) steel beam (I beam), part of the rail bunker structural steelwork failed, becoming detached and falling into the hopper. The loss of the beam compromises the structural integrity of the bunker. Investigations indicate a number of contributing factors for the failure - stress, corrosion, welds missed during manufacture between the end plate and the I beam and insufficient thickness of end plate.
