| English term or phrase: counterpulsator | The xxxxx is a microprocessor-controlled system that inflates and deflates three pairs of air cuffs which compress vascular beds in the calves, lower thighs, and upper thighs.
As diastole begins, the cuffs inflate separately – in sequence – from the calves, to the lower thighs, to the upper thighs including the lower buttocks. This inflation sequence generates and impels a counterpulsation wave -- a retrograde pulse -- that raises coronary perfusion pressure during diastole.
In the process of creating counterpulsation from the lower extremities, the compression sequence of EECP™ increases venous return, raising cardiac output.
At the end of diastole, just before the next QRS complex, the cuffs deflate simultaneously. The vasculature of the lower extremities that was “emptied” by the compressive action of cuff inflation, regains conformity with cuff deflation to accept cardiac output, considerably reducing the heart’s workload.
In short, therapy with xxxx increases coronary perfusion pressure and blood flow, reduces the heart’s workload, and improves cardiac output.
