Article 8.4(a) of the Directive defines PPE ‘of complex design‘ intended to protect against mortal danger, or against dangers that may seriously and irreversibly harm the health of an individual, the immediate effects of which cannot be identified in sufficient time as covering exclusively:
filtering respiratory devices for protection against solid and liquid aerosols or irritant, dangerous, toxic or radio-toxic gases;
respiratory protection devices providing full insulation from the atmosphere, including those for use in diving;
PPE providing only limited protection against chemical attack or against ionising radiation;
emergency equipment for use in high-temperature environments, the effects of which are comparable to those of an air temperature of 100 degrees C or more and which may or may not be characterised by the presence of infra-red radiation, flames or the projection of large amounts of molten material;
emergency equipment for use in low-temperature environments the effects of which are comparable to those of an air temperature of -50 degrees C or less;
PPE to protect against falls from a height;
PPE to protect against electrical risks and dangerous voltages or that used as insulation in high-tension work.

Med personlig skyddsutrustning menas varje utrustning, som är avsedd att bäras eller hållas av en person till skydd mot en eller flera hälso- eller säkerhetsrisker, exempelvis buller och hetta. Med personlig skyddsutrustning avses också:
• kombinationsutrustningar som skyddar en person mot flera risker, exempelvis skyddshjälm med hörselskydd eller visir.
• fasta eller löstagbara skyddsanordningar som är kombinerade med en personlig utrustning utan skyddskaraktär och som bärs eller hålls av en person vid utförandet av en särskild uppgift. Ett exempel kan vara luftslang från en kompressor till en andningsapparat.
• utbytbara komponenter i personliga skyddsutrustningar som är väsentliga för en tillfredsställande funktion och som uteslutande används för sådan utrustning, exempelvis filter till andningsskydd. Varje system som släpps ut på marknaden i samband med en personlig skyddsutrustning för att koppla denna till en annan extern, kompletterande anordning skall också anses ingå i utrustningen. Detta även om systemet inte är avsett att bäras eller hållas permanent av användaren under hela den period han exponeras för en risk.
När det gäller komplicerad personlig skyddsutrustning avsedd att skydda mot livsfara eller allvarlig permanent skada ska dessutom en tillverkningskontroll ha utförts. Detta gäller utrustning där användaren inte själv kan upptäcka risken i tid. (För specifik information om vilken utrustning som berörs, se artikel 8, punkt 4 i direktivet, alternativt §9 i föreskriften AFS 1996:7 ).
