"En ligatur är en hopskrivning av två bokstäver som med tiden vuxit ut till ett eget skrivtecken. Bokstaven W är från början en hopskrivning av två stycken V eller U och kallas fortfarande dubbel-V på svenska. En ligatur är även en ihopdragning av bokstäver som i fonten skall tryckas tätare tilllsammans."
